Proposed Primary Route Changes

Frequently Asked Questions

The proposed primary route changes are for routes 2, 4, 6, 7, 7/6, 10, 13, and the addition of a new route 14.

  • Route 2 – Remove the hold at O’Brien and Coldwater, then take Coldwater to N. Saginaw, Left on N. Saginaw to Stanley Rd., Left on Stanley to Detroit St., Left onto Detroit St., back on the normal route back to the MTA Northrup Abrams Transportation Center
  • Route 4 – With a new downtown loop being proposed that will run down University, rather than duplicating service, moving route 4 up to Flushing Rd. providing more service options for area residents and better serving the Hurley Medical Campus. The route 4-5 will also follow this same outbound path.
  • Route 6 – Route 6 will be removed.  The primary route study suggested removing this route.  In the last year, MTA installed automatic passenger counters (APC’s) on our fixed route fleet.  The APC data agreed that the ridership doesn’t support an entire route.  That said portions of the route will be moved to other routes such as 2, 7, 13, and the new route 14.  Removing route 6 removes the need for the evening combined route 7/6 as well.  Any areas no longer serviced by a route that are currently serviced by route 6 today still have the option of using the MTA Your Ride service.
  • Route 7 – The Mott Campus portion will be taken over by the new downtown loop.  The Western Rd. portion will be moved to route 10.  The outbound portion will change as it will head out Robert T. Longway to Franklin.  On the inbound portion, the segment of Dort Highway between Carpenter and Franklin will be removed and replaced by going Carpenter to Selby and Selby to Stewart.  Then the bus will take Stewart back to Dort, and Dort to Franklin.  It will then head down Franklin to Delaware, then right on Delaware to Lewis, left on Lewis to Davison, right on Davison back to Franklin.  Once the bus reaches Robert T. Longway, it will turn right and go to Chavez where it will proceed back to the MTA Northrup Abrams Transportation Center.
  • Route 7/6 – This combined evening route will be eliminated due to the elimination of the route 6.  There will no longer be a need for it.
  • Route 10 – This route will no longer go into Courtland Center on the outbound leg from downtown.  The route 15 bus also goes by there and services the stops along Court St. just in front of the mall.  The bus will no longer turn left onto Leith St.  The stop near the corner of Leith and Center Rd. will be moved to Center Rd.  It will continue up Center Rd. to Richfield Rd., turn left, take Richfield to Averill, turn left, Averill to Leith, turn right, Leith to Western, turn right, turn right, Western to Richfield and turn right.  Once on Richfield Rd., it will take that to Center Rd. again where it will turn right onto Center Rd.  The bus will no longer service the portion of Richfield Rd. between Center and Covert, nor will it service Covert Rd.  Automatic passenger count (APC) data indicates that ridership in that area cannot sustain a bus route moving forward.  NorthGate at the corner of Davison Rd. and Center Rd. will still be serviced as it is today.
  • Route 13 – Route 13 will now pick up part of route 6 on the inbound run.  When coming north up Dort Highway, it will turn left onto Stewart, right onto Andrew (becomes Horton), and take Horton up to Carpenter, turn left on Carpenter, then come back down Selby to Pierson.  No service is being removed, service is being added.
  • Route 14 – The new Downtown Flint loop is being added as a connection to serve the residents, college campuses, and cultural center areas.  This half hour loop will run the same hours as rest of the routes, originating from the MTA Northrup Abrams Transportation Center downtown and making the loop from there.  This will provide 30-minute service at all times making it easier to get around the downtown area.

Improve service, operational improvements, and expand access to groceries, medical facilities, and educational institutions.

No, the route changes still must go in front of the MTA Board of Directors for review and approval.  All comments solicited will be presented as part of that.  If approved, these will be implemented and become permanent changes subject to periodic review and minor modifications for improvement.

No, these permanent changes will be all day everyday changes

In 2024, MTA ran a primary route study that noted several issues and possible changes needed in the primary route system.  After reviewing the report, MTA decided a change was needed.  While not all the proposed changes are related to the study, they also present opportunities to improve the overall system and provide more opportunities for passengers.  Some changes from the study were implemented last year going strictly by the study and feedback from drivers and passengers alike.  This year, MTA has automatic passenger counters (APC’s) on their fleet that are automatically counting each time a person gets on and off the bus and can tell our planning team exactly how many get on and off at a particular stop.  This data was used in conjunction with the route study this time to make the determination and ultimately some of the other changes fell in line as a result.

Yes, all our primary route buses are ADA accessible.  The only thing changing is the routes themselves.

No, fares will not be impacted by these changes and are not planned for an increase at this time.
